2048 strategy
Good 2048 play looks boring: pick a corner for your biggest tile, build descending values along one edge, and stop throwing Up when your max tile lives in the bottom-left. This page is for that habit work — with a live board so you can practice, not a 40-slide carousel.
Hints on the board try to speak the same language (corner, clear a merge, don’t strand the max tile). Use them as coaching, not scripture.
When to use
You reach ~512 then die the same way every time; you want a repeatable plan; you are comparing “corner strategy” advice you saw in a video.
When not to
You still do not know merges → how to play 2048. You only want “how do I win once” → how to beat 2048. You want practice with Undo → 2048 undo.
Assumptions
Advice targets classic 4×4. Corner choice (bottom-left vs bottom-right) is preference — consistency matters more than which corner. Randomness of new tiles means no strategy is 100%.
How
- Pick a home corner for the highest tile; try not to move it out.
- Keep one edge sorted (e.g. 128-64-32-16) so merges feed the corner.
- Prefer moves that create merges over “looking around.”
- When stuck, hit Hint and read the reason; undo if you are in practice mode.
Examples
- Max tile in bottom-left; you press Up “just to see” → max floats mid-board → recovery gets ugly (Treat Up as rare.)
- Two 64s ready to merge but a 2 blocks the lane → Hint may say clear that blocker first
Gotchas
- “Always swipe the same two directions” guides lie when a spawn ruins the edge — adapt, don’t dogma.
- Chasing a second big tile in the opposite corner usually splits your board.
- Strategy articles without a board are easy to skim and hard to feel; keep practicing above.

Common questions
- What is the corner strategy?
- Park your highest tile in one corner and build toward it along an edge so merges feed the corner instead of floating mid-board.
- Should I always avoid one direction?
- Often yes for the direction that yanks the max tile out of its corner. Still adapt when a spawn ruins the edge — dogma loses runs.
- Do hints use the same ideas?
- They try to talk about corners and clear merges. Still verify with your eyes before you commit.
- Does strategy change on 5×5?
- Same habits, more space. Open the 5×5 page when you want that grid; Best score there is stored separately.
